The workshop was marked by group activities, which provided diverse exchanges of experiences and ideas among the participants
By Priscila Soares (REM MT) The REM MT Program and WWF-Brazil held, last Tuesday (13), in Cuiabá, a workshop to map actors in the chains of restoration of native vegetation and rehabilitation of degraded pastures in Mato Grosso. The event's main objective was to identify the actors, their work connections and the locations where they operate in the state, in addition to discussing the challenges faced and identifying potential synergies that could help scale up these activities that are essential for environmental conservation.
During the event, several dynamics were carried out, including the mapping of actors, aiming to identify who works with pasture restoration and rehabilitation, where they work and their connections in the landscape. Another dynamic focused on the links in the restoration chain, identifying on the map of Mato Grosso, the location of nurseries, seed networks, restoration implementers and training carried out.
The workshop also validated previously identified challenges and opportunities to overcome them and expand the scale of pasture restoration and rehabilitation in Mato Grosso. The diversity of participants at the event included government managers, seed collectors, seed networks, implementers, consultants and NGOs, which provided a comprehensive and rich view of the current scenario, reinforcing the organizations' commitment to joining efforts in the territory with local actors.
Veronica Maioli, Conservation and Restoration specialist at WWF-Brazil, highlighted the importance of the partnership with the REM MT Program: “REM is a comprehensive and important program for the state. For us, this partnership is valuable, because alone we cannot cope with the countless challenges of the landscape. We really need to work together to scale up activities and work in the best possible way with local stakeholders,” said the expert.
The coordinator of the Sustainable Production and Family Farming and Traditional Peoples and Communities subprograms of REM MT, Daniela Melo, explained that the event was important for directing future actions. “The expectation is that this mapping carried out in the workshop can serve as a tool to direct future actions and projects, both for the REM MT Program and WWF-Brazil and for other decision-makers, allowing a better understanding of the state and the actors who work in the area of pasture restoration and rehabilitation,” explains Daniela.
WWF-BRAZIL
WWF-Brazil is a Brazilian NGO that has been working collectively with partners from civil society, academy, governments and companies across the country for 28 years to combat socio-environmental degradation and defend the lives of people and nature. We are connected in an interdependent global network that seeks urgent solutions to the climate emergency. The organization has a specific strategy for operating in the pasture restoration and rehabilitation chains, both in Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, with a focus on the Pantanal headwaters. This landscape is considered a priority for WWF-Brazil, due to the high level of deforestation, economic importance and water resilience, since 80% of the water that feeds the Pantanal flood pulses comes from the Headwaters.
The workshop in Mato Grosso is part of a series of events that have already begun in 2022, in Mato Grosso do Sul, with the same purpose of mapping the actors involved in the restoration to contribute to the elaboration of a Restoration Plan for the Headwaters. Such activities should continue in the coming years.

REM MT also promotes initiatives that stimulate a low-carbon economy and the reduction of deforestation, in order to reduce CO2 emissions on the planet. The REM MT Program is coordinated by the Government of the State of Mato Grosso, through the State Secretariat for the Environment (SEMA - Secretaria de Estado de Meio Ambiente), and has the Brazilian Biodiversity Fund (FUNBIO - Fundo Brasileiro para a Biodiversidade) as its financial manager.
