Ecofalante Film Festival: documentary addresses the struggle of extractivists families
outubro, 01 2024
Violent expulsion, non-compliance with judicial decisions and connivance with the invaders are some of the reports of the documentary "Exiles - Extractivists Expelled with Bullets in Rondônia"
By WWF-Brazil Armed men, tractors opening roads and tearing down the forest: it's like that, with violence and under threat, that families of extractivists who lived in Resex (Extractive Reserve) Jaci-Paraná, in Rondônia, had to leave behind their homes and their livelihoods. In its place are now illegal cattle ranches, owned by well-known and influential people, who easily sell their product to large slaughterhouses. The drama of these populations is the subject of the documentary Exiles - Extractivists Expelled with Bullets in Rondônia” – directed by Marcio Sanches, Maira Hofmeister and Fernanda Wenzel, which will have two sessions, both with free entry, in São Paulo: on 8/4 at 2:30 pm, at the Cultural Reserve, and on 8/7 at 7:00 pm, at the São Paulo Cultural Center.
Held by the Kanindé Ethnoenvironmental Defense Association – of the Rondônia Seringueiros Organization – and by WWF-Brazil, the documentary “Exiles - Extractivists Expelled with Bullets in Rondônia” is part of the list of 122 films from 24 countries in the 13th edition of the Ecofalante Film Festival, considered the most important South American event for audiovisual production related to socio-environmental themes. The work brings testimonies and forceful interviews that show how families of extractivists were violently expelled from Resex Jaci-Paraná, in Rondônia, with the connivance of authorities. The film also details the land grabbing scheme, non-compliance with judicial decisions and attempts to reduce the area through the Legislative Assembly.
The Resex Jaci-Paraná is a protected area that extends over three municipalities in Rondônia. It was created in 1996 to protect the forest and the families who live from the extraction of rubber, chestnuts, açaí and other products from the Amazon. Almost 30 years after its creation, however, data from the government of Rondônia show that there are 765 farms within the area that should be protected.
The documentary is also part of the Ecofalante Universities Program, which brings films that are part of the Ecofalante's educational project. With more than 250 titles, the objective is to bring the socio-environmental debate to schools and universities throughout the year. All information about the Ecofalante Film Festival, which takes place between August 1 and 14, is available on the Ecofalante website: www.ecofalante.org.br.
