Positioning note: Democracy is non-negotiable

WWF-Brazil condemns the criminal attacks performed against the Brazilian democratic order on January 8, 2023, and also expresses absolute repudiation to them. The invasion and depredation of public buildings by those who do not accept the result of free and legitimate elections, with the aim of overthrowing the constitutionally established government, is a crime against the rule of law (article  359-L of the Penal Code).

Democracy is non-negotiable. Without it, there is no way to progress in the promotion of social well-being, environmental protection and justice. It is unacceptable, therefore, that a violent minority wants to impose its will, in an authoritarian way, on the rest of Brazilian society, erasing guarantees hard won in recent decades.

On this sad day for Brazilian history, WWF-Brazil also comes to express its solidarity and support for the highest authorities of the three branches of power, attacked by these intolerant and criminal groups.
