Cerrado had more than 10 thousand outbreaks between January and June, the worst mark for the period since 2010

In the first six months of 2022, the number of fire outbreaks increased by 13% in the Cerrado and 17% in the Amazon, compared to the same period last year, according to the Queimadas Program of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). Deforestation also has a record high trend in both biomes.

In the Cerrado, 10,869 fires were detected between the beginning of January and the end of June, an increase of 13% compared to the same period in 2021, when 9,568 fires were recorded. It is the highest number for the period since 2010.

The figures ​​recorded in June 2022 remained stable compared to 2021. Between June 1 and 30, 2022, 4,239 hotspots were detected in the Cerrado, against 4,181 last year - an increase of 1.4%.

In the Amazon, the cumulative number of fire outbreaks in the first six months of the year was 7,533 - an increase of 17% compared to the same period in 2021, when 6,387 fires were detected. In June 2022, 2,562 outbreaks were detected, against 2,305 in 2021 - an increase of 11%.
 

Deforestation

INPE's DETER system's data for deforestation were updated until June 24th. But, even with a week to go until the end of the month, the Cerrado has already in 2022 the worst month of June on record since the beginning of monitoring in the biome: 752 km2 were deforested in just three weeks. The area under deforestation alert in June 2022 increased by 55% compared to June last year.

From the beginning of the year to June 24, the Cerrado also had the worst start to the year since the launch of DETER in the biome. 3,364 km2 have been deforested since the beginning of 2022 - a 34% increase over the same period in 2021.

In the Amazon, the month of June shows a 17% reduction in the number of deforestation alerts, compared to June 2021. In the accumulated alerts since the beginning of the year, however, the Amazon had the worst start to the year since the launch of DETER: 3,750 km2, an increase of 4% compared to the same period in 2021.
