The Bean Saga – The Journey of Brazilian Soy

dezembro, 12 2018

A digital platform designed to facilitate understanding of soybean production in Brazil, its arrival and expansion across the country’s territory, the characteristics of this crop, the volumes produced by each state, the destination of this product and the main actors involved in the process
Do you eat beef, chicken or pork? Do you use shampoo or other cosmetics, such as sun cream? Or do you consume vitamins or medicine in capsules? Or margarine?

If you answered YES to any of these questions I’ll let you in on a little “secret": whether directly or indirectly, you consume soy. Indeed, you don’t need to be a vegetarian to consume this rich source of protein as it can be found in products that you would never guess!

The demand is high, and Brazil is the favourite where this oleaginous plant of Asian origins is involved, which is (almost) like gold as far as agribusiness is concerned.

But what is this process like? Where in Brazil can we find this crop? How long has it been cultivated in the country and where did it start? Is there soy in the Amazon? Who buys it? What is it made into? Who profits from this? And who loses out?

The process from seed to pod, from pod to bean and from bean to meal, oil and other products is intense: practically a saga! And this is the story I want to tell you. The Bean Saga is a way of explaining this to those who have no idea where Brazilian soybean comes from even though they consume it on a daily basis: www.wwf.org.br/thesoybeansaga
