WWF-Brazil hopes that COP 30 will be built by and for the peoples of the Amazon

WWF-Brazil celebrates the announcement of Brazil being chosen this Friday (26) by the Latin American and Caribbean Group to host COP 30, in 2025. The possibility that the event will  be held in Belém do Pará, an iconic city in the Amazon is symbolic: climate negotiations will take place in the biome with the greatest biodiversity in the world, which is close to its point of no return unless urgent measures are adopted. The Amazon also harbors significant human diversity, from Indigenous Peoples and Local communities to urban populations.

COP 30 is therefore a remarkable  opportunity for Brazil to present an effective agenda to the world for adaptation and mitigation of the climate crisis. This is the chance for the country to take on the role of a green economy powerhouse, with socially just and sustainable development, anchored in nature-based solutions.

Until then, it is necessary for the country to drastically reduce deforestation and conversion numbers, adopt a solid energy transition strategy - including the non-exploitation of oil and gas in the Amazon Basin - and strengthen the protection of indigenous peoples and territories.

It is important to note that 2025 not only marks the 10-year anniversary of the Paris Agreement, but is also the year when the second round of Nationally-Determined Contributions (NDCs) must be submitted. It's key that Brazil enhances its 2030 targets and sets strong 2035 targets to lead a movement from all countries to finally close the ambition gap.

Finally, WWF-Brazil hopes that COP 30 will be built by and for the peoples of the Amazon, centrally discussing how to reduce the impacts of climate change for the most vulnerable, such as outskirt populations, indigenous people and local communities.
