WWF-Brasil takes part in the Peoples of the Cerrado Fair

WWF-Brasil’s Cerrado Pantanal Programme supported and took part in the eighth edition of the Peoples of the Cerrado Fair held between 5th and 8th June in the Funarte Cultural Complex in Brasília. The event brought together representatives from various peoples including quilombolas, geraizeiros, vazanteiros, babaçu nut breakers, family farmers and members of indigenous communities.

On Friday 6th June, WWF-Brasil launched the results of the Rapid Assessment and Priorization of Protected Area Management (RAPPAM) methodology used to assess the management effectiveness of the system of protected areas in the State of Goiás.

Julio Cesar Sampaio, coordinator of WWF-Brasil’s Cerrado Pantanal Programme, presented the main results of the assessment during a debate on the mosaic of protected areas coordinated by the Cerrado Pantanal Programme which included the Chico Mendes Institute of Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), Fundação Palmares, the National Indian Foundation (Funai), and the NGO Funatura.

On Saturday 7th June, conservation analysts from the Cerrado Pantanal Programme and WWF-Brasil’s Landscape Ecology Laboratory presented the results of a mapping exercise of extractivism in the Sertão Veredas Peruaçu Mosaic which was conducted in partnership with the Sertão Veredas Agrisilviculture Extractivism Cooperative (Coop Sertão Veredas) and involved over 40 communities and eight participative mapping workshops. On the same day, WWF’s team also presented the 2012 version of the Mosaic Land Use Map which is updated every two years.

The Sertão Veredas Peruaçu Mosaic

WWF-Brasil’s Cerrado Pantanal Programme has been implementing and supporting environmental conservation and restoration activities in the Sertão Veredas Peruaçu Mosaic (MSVP) since 2010. WWF’s team also works with traditional communities and farmers to promote compliance with environmental legislation and sustainable production that generates income and leads to improvements in the quality of life of the population that lives in this region which has a low HDI. The MSVP covers an area of over 1.8 million hectares, which is equivalent to almost 8% of the total area protected in the biome, spans 10 municipalities in the North of the State of Minas Gerais and one municipality in the southeast of the State of Bahia, and was officially recognised by the Environment Ministry in 2009.
