On December 8, the workshop “Managing the Risk of Deforestation” was held in São Paulo. The workshop brought to a close the first cycle of research into the main tools for socioenvironmental management that are currently available, demonstrating their functions and identifying possible improvements so that they can be used more widely by financial institutions. Organised by WWF-Brazil and the Brazilian Federation of Banks (FEBRABAN) to align capital flows for the Collaboration for Forests and Agriculture (CFA), the event involved the participation of financial institutions associated with FEBRABAN, including Santander, Banco do Brasil, Rabobank, Caixa, Tribanco, BTG Pactual, Citibank, Daycoval, Bradesco and Itaú.

According to Roberta Simonetti, Sustainable Finance Strategy Leader for WWF-Brazil, “The aim of the meeting was to present the mapping performed by the Sustainability Research Centre at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV/GVces) in partnership with FEBRABAN, the Collaboration for Forests and Agriculture and WWF-Brazil, on existing tools to map and evaluate the risk of deforestation in financing.”

In addition to this mapping, practical presentations were given on four free tools: Global Forest Watch, Trase, Agroideal and RiscoSocioambiental. These were presented by WRI, GCP, TNC and WWF-Brazil respectively. Participants were provided with the opportunity to understand how to navigate the tools, try out their functions and clear up any doubts.

A result of the partnership between WWF-Brazil and the Image Processing and Geoprocessing Lab (LAPIG) at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), the RiscoSocioambiental platform is currently under development and aims to facilitate access and connection to information from a range of sources, as well as offering support in the decision-making process for the different parties involved, including financial institutions providing agricultural credit in Brazil. It works by providing a set of relevant secondary data through an easy to navigate interactive map and reports including series of historical data. Although it is still under development, this tool can already be accessed.
