Deforestation has been occurring at alarming rates in Brazil, and one of the greatest challenges is the conservation of biomes and their ecosystems.
The pressure for increased food production through the expansion of agricultural lands and pastures over native forest areas in the country, especially in the Cerrado and the Amazon, is one of the factors contributing to the advance of deforestation.
The fact is that deforestation is not necessary for production: it is enough to improve the use of land already employed for agriculture and livestock in Brazil, which today is underutilized or degraded, with low productive capacity. That’s why we work to transform production cycles, fostering collaboration among governments, companies, the financial sector, and agricultural producers.
Responsible agriculture and livestock farming works to restore degraded pastures and conserve native vegetation, without the need for further deforestation. This practice is essential to address the effects of climate change, conserve biodiversity, and uphold human rights. By replacing deforestation with strategies for restoring degraded pastures, it is possible to achieve efficiency, economic stability, and the preservation of natural resources that sustain rural production and human life.
Operating in DCF Markets means seeking solutions to ensure that production chains become free from deforestation and conversion. Through engagement with the corporate sector, we disseminate knowledge of methodologies and tools that help companies adjust their operations to meet socio-environmental protection standards sufficient to eradicate deforestation and conversion.
To engage in political advocacy within this sector means to work toward the creation and implementation of zero-deforestation policies, encompassing the elimination of all types of deforestation both legal and illegal. Through political advocacy, we seek to influence discussions on legal and market regulations to strengthen the monitoring of production chains, promote the biodiversity conservation agenda, and discourage practices associated with deforestation.
We work to positively influence the financial market regarding the risks of the current agricultural model, demonstrating that deforestation generates economic, social, and environmental impacts. We seek to strengthen initiatives that channel financial flows toward deforestation-free and low-carbon businesses, transforming potential sources of degradation into investments in the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.
Working on traceability is essential to eradicating deforestation in Brazil, ensuring production chains that are free from conversion and uphold socio-environmental transparency. In addition to reducing the impacts of climate change, such as droughts and floods, businesses that follow this path gain competitive advantages. With solutions already available, origin control strengthens the economy and generates benefits for society.
To consolidate and share WWF-Brazil’s knowledge on zero deforestation, we publish a variety of scientific studies and reports. Our goal is to use scientific evidence to inform and influence public and corporate policy debates in Brazil. Check out some of our publications below:
